DIY Body Scrub & Bath Salt

In this blog I share how to make your own body scrub and bath salt with only natural products and using you favourite essential oils. It is so simple and easy and a succes quaranteed Christmas present. It is also really fun to make together with your friends or kids, so it might be a nice activity for the holidays.

Together with my friend Siri I organized a workhop on making your own homemade natural Christmas presents. Our intention was to organize a really informal evening, so we combined it with a potluck. First we enjoyed all the lovely food everyone brought and had a lot of fun. I had a lot of succes with my Chickpea, Cilantro and lime salat a great and fresh dish made within 15 minutes.

After dinner it was time for the  real work. We made a body scrub and a bath salt.

I give you some possible recipes, but be creative and create your own blend. The essential oil will add a natural smell, but they also have different health benefits you can look into. Depending on how you decorate the jar you can also use it also as a normal present, it is not only limited to Christmas. Have fun.

Body Scrub

We started with the body scrub, Siri has a lot of experience in making it so she gave a wonderful demonstration. The scrub consists of three elements. Sugar, (coconut)oil & essential oil.

By using a body scrub you remove the dead skin cells and reveal the healthy new skin underneath.
The sugar will exfoliate and the coconut oil will nourish the skin.

Use the body scrub 1-2 times a week on wet skin in shower. Scrub in a circular motion clockwise and rinse off. Your skin will be soft and moisturized.

Body scrub recipes

This is the basic recipe you can use the essential oils of your wish.

You can use as well white as cane sugar. I like to mix them, since it gives nice color to the scrub.

  • 3/4 cup white sugar / cane sugar
  • 1/2 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup liquid oil (eg almond oil, fractionated coconut oil, sunflower oil)
  • 10 drops essentail oils of your choice

Mix the sugar in a bowl and start to add the oils and until you have a slushy scrub. Fill one or more glass jars with a lit.
Decorate the jar with a label, a pretty ribbon and a little decoration (cinnamon, leaves, flower). Just be creative.

Sweet Orange Ginger Scrub

This scrub is as well calming as uplifting. A lovely treat to sooth muscle soreness as well

  • 1/2 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup liquid oil (eg almond oil, fractionated coconut oil, sunflower oil)
  • 6 drops wild orange essential oil
  • 4 drops ginger essential oil

Bath Salt

The other lovely gift we made was a bath salt, with epsom salt and essential oils as main ingredients.

Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is a great to use in a (foot)bath. Epsom salt has a lot of health benefits. It helps to relieve stress, to eliminate toxics of the body and to energize the body. But it is also very useful when you have splinter. By soaking the body part with the splinter in warm water with epsom salt, the inflamation will be reduced by the magnesium sulfate and your skin will be softer so it makes it easier to remove the splinter.

Add this salt to warm water to enjoy a foot soak or a relaxing bath.

Foot soak
Add 1/4 cup of the salt to very warm water until dissolved.
Soak your feet for about 20 minutes.
Rinse your feet with water and dry them.

Relaxing Bath
Add 1/2 cup of the salt to very warm water until dissolved.
Enjoy a lovely soothing bath for about 20 minutes.
Rinse with water after.
